Job Description

The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing medical support services in conjunction with NOVA TC’s Nursing Director, Medical Practitioner and consulting Psychiatrist.  These include the supervision and monitoring of medications, preparation of nursing histories on residents, scheduling and assisting the completion of admission physical examinations, routine follow up medical care, and providing medical recommendations for the treatment plan. 

Major Responsibilities

  • Complete nursing histories and nursing assessment of new program members in assigned areas.
  • Coordinate physical examinations with the Nursing Director and Nurse Practitioner and coordinate follow-up medical care.
  • Monitor, maintain and supervise medication inventory in assigned areas.
  • Provide medications directly to program members or delegate function to appropriately trained employees.
  • Monitor general health status of program members in assigned areas.
  • Document pertinent medical information in program member’s electronic record and program logs.
  • Assess medical emergencies and take appropriate measures, including providing first aide and contacting emergency services when necessary.
  • Communicate health concerns and observations to the Nursing Director and staff members.
  • Participate in case reviews and utilization reviews by providing relevant medical/nursing information.
  • Communicate with Food Services regarding special dietary needs when necessary.
  • Provide direct nursing care as needed.
  • Offer supportive/informal counseling to program members, within the guidelines of NOVA TC’s Philosophy.
  • Initiate and/or complete nursing assessment on youth returning from “running away” in the absence of the Nursing Director. 
  • Develop specialized nursing protocols in conjunction with the Nursing Director as needed.
  • Facilitate health/medication teaching opportunities with employees, program members and program member’s families.
  • Maintain professional license by working required hours and participating in courses and seminars.
  • Maintain communication with Nursing Director to provide for continuity of care in all residential programs.
  • Coordinate follow-up care with outside resources as needed. 
  • Facilitate nursing groups on health and wellness related topics for program members. 

Job Requirements

 Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be a licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Nebraska. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.  Associates Degree in Nursing or related field required.
  • Two years nursing experience.
  • Two years experience in the field of Substance Abuse and Mental Health preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office computer software and Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain complete and accurate records.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to work with minimal direct supervision.
  • Knowledge of the physiological and psychological effects of substance abuse.
  • Knowledge of licensing requirements relevant to health standards.
  • Knowledge of state standards on medication administration.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, program members and appropriate community agencies, and to function in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Valid driver’s license that meets agency standards and ability to meet transportation needs of agency.
